building streamlined features to reduce administrative stress
the customer.

Promethean World, a global leader in educational technology, provides interactive displays (IFPDs) used in classrooms and meeting rooms. IT Admins manage these devices, ensuring they run the latest software. Many large school districts own hundreds of devices, manually installing applications and updating firmware is tedious and time-consuming.

the Problem.

IT Admins lack an efficient system to monitor and install and update applications across multiple devices, both pre-installed and post-installed. They need a way to manage installations in bulk, toggle between automatic and manual updates, and troubleshoot issues—none of which exist in the current system. They also want more control over their updates, reducing the need for frequent firmware releases.

My role.
  • Clarified Technical Challenges: Identified key technical issues and aligned on app installation and update expectations.

  • User Journey Mapping: Mapped journeys for both pre-installed and post-installed apps, including update scenarios.

  • Streamlined User Flows: Created flows to reduce friction in managing hundreds of device updates.

  • Wireframes & Prototypes: Visualized solutions through wireframes and prototypes.

  • Developer Collaboration: Worked closely with developers, iterating designs to meet technical needs.

2 application types - each with their own restrictions/guidelines

  1. Pre-installed -  factory installed

  2. Post-installed - customer installed

3 update methods - each with specific rules of approach

  1. Manual

  2. Automatic

  3. Forced

3 options for device selection - each depending on app and approach chosen

  1. No devices

  2. All supported devices

  3. Tag groups

99+ questions that I asked on my path to understand all the technical capabilities and user needs.

A few of the many questions I asked along the way.

IT Admins needed an efficient way to check the status of the installation on their devices. This modal provides all status details.

the solution.
  • Bulk Application Management: Enabled IT Admins to efficiently manage applications across multiple devices simultaneously, saving time and reducing repetitive tasks.

  • Flexible Update Controls: Provided options for switching between manual and automatic updates, offering flexibility based on organizational needs.

  • Streamlined Uninstallation Process: Simplified the ability to uninstall applications in bulk, allowing for faster device management and reducing unnecessary storage use.

  • Enhanced Troubleshooting: Included tools for diagnosing and resolving application errors, enabling quicker issue resolution for IT teams.

  • Seamless Integration: Fully incorporated the solution into the Admin Tools suite, creating a cohesive experience for managing both pre-installed and post-installed applications.

the outcome.

The new feature significantly reduced the operational burden on IT teams, achieving:

  • Increased adoption of Promethean software solutions.

  • Higher user engagement through increased site visits, device enrollments, and firmware updates.

  • Enhanced productivity for IT Admins and lower operational costs.

This solution not only improved device management but also empowered app teams to deliver new features independently, strengthening Promethean’s market position.
